Wild City – three episodes about wildlife and wild places in Singapore you must watch!

Update – Wild City 4 was broadcast on Fri 1st Mar 2019 [link]

Discover the wild side which survives in urban Singapore, in three episodes narrated by Sir David Attenborough. The series showcases great photography by the Beachhouse Pictures team and are quite well researched, so these are an excellent introduction to wild places and wildlife in Singapore.

Mind you, they did have to work hard for some the footage, like that of the elusive Sunda pangolin. And not everything obligingly turned up to be filmed, so there are no turtles beaching to lay eggs. But even the “easy footage” is remarkable to watch, and I particularly enjoyed the lovely high resolution of sand bubblers working hard on the sandy beach before the tide rose. Even if I watch them live, it is hardly as clear as the large images on the screen!

Wild City 3 “Islands” which premiered last night on Channel News Asia featured more of invertebrates which are a treasure house of stories and strategies.

These will certainly be a great introduction to nature in Singapore for my highly urbanised and poorly exposed students in LSM1103 Biodiversity, LSM1303 Animal Behaviour and LSM2251 Ecology and the Environment, before they embark on their field trip and projects. And they will be a great surprise for delegates to the International Otter Congress in July 2016.

So it is wonderful that the episodes are available to us right now, and in high-resolution too!
